Warm Idling Daydream

[Kicking back and enjoying the digital scenery is for nerds, but it isn't all bad. After slowly clearing out the meadow of enemies, Yael and Brambles are left alone in a peaceful flowery meadow where the sun feels no less warm and pleasant filtering down through the leaves as it does in reality.

For a brief, fleeting moment, Yael loses track of his worldly problems. He can move about and run freely in this place. He isn't in constant pain. He can lie beneath the shade of a massive oak tree and feel freedom like he hasn't in months...

Yael sighs. It's a telling sigh and he realizes it, breaking their amicable silence once he realizes what's happened.]

They really went all out on this game. I bet there are people who'd rather be here than out in the real world.

[dapples]

I suppose I can see why that might be. In a world like this one, you can take on a brand new identity and appearance outside of your normal, and become something even greater than yourself.

[ He brushes his fingers against some of the game's animated clovers. ]

Some people might really crave an escape like that ... especially if they're coming from a hard living situation and need a distraction. That's just not something I can relate to, though. I like this game, but I like the real world a whole lot more.

[Now there's a statement he didn't expect to hear. Liking the real world more than this synthetic one... Well, Yael doesn't necessarily disagree, but he's curious:]

Yeah? Why's that? The real world has wars and natural disasters and tragedy wherever you look.

That's true ... there are many bad things that happen that we can't control.

The real world isn't perfect, but it's real. The smells, sights, sounds, feelings ... they all happen for real. I used to spend too much time worrying about things I couldn't change so I changed my perspective. It's about the only thing a person has control over.

Hm. That's a surprisingly mature answer.

[Most people don't view the world as Brambles does. That said, he's absolutely correct in Yael's eyes.]

You've only got one life to live. No sense in spending it being miserable, but that's not to say life doesn't like to fuck with you when it can.

That's very true. My best friend in real life had some extreme trials and tribulations to go through. He was born into a family of wealth and privilege but suffered immensely within it. Even those with blessings can struggle if their other needs aren't appropriately met.

[He is surprised, as a matter of fact. For a boy that looks like he has nothing in his head but a pair of ping pong balls, he's remarkably world-wise. Perhaps that's why Yael feels that Brambles is someone he can get along with.]

Sorry about your friend. He in a better place now?

[Yael has had his own familial struggles, but it's nothing he cares to talk about.]

I think so. His family more or less shunned him, and he still struggles. There's no rush in getting over these things ... but he's told me that his found family helps him keep it together.

[Yael is quiet for a moment longer, letting Brambles' words sink in.]

Anyone can pull themselves up out of a rut if they try, huh. That's inspirational stuff.

[ He thinks for a moment. ]

Mm. Less that. More like ... it's easier to deal with hardships if you have a support network.

[Yael huffs, perhaps tellingly. A support network... He's lived and survived on his own for a long time now without one. Those who have them are quite fortunate, he thinks.]

Of course that's not what I meant. You have to do what you can with the cards you've been dealt, and if something isn't working ... to try something new. At least, that's how it was with my best mate.
