[ Michel minds, a bit... He keeps staring warily at Mithrun, like he's expecting to see the room at large begin rampaging any moment now. There's precedent... ]

I don't believe so. Gorre had that data to begin with. There was nothing for him to gain with that door open. Justy or Oria's would have done as well.

[ For the buff, he means. And Gorre had certainly done that deliberately at least once. ]

... Then, why?

Researching again, Mithrun?

[ His tone is a little dry, but not offended. There's an intersect somewhere here, between science and a game enthusiast's dissection of the fight mechanics. ]

The more we understand, the better chance we have.

( So, maybe. He slowly pushes himself up, to better look at Michel. )

... I relished in my heartbreak, as Macha. The more it hurt, the closer I felt I understood it - the better my data was, for me to come so far. But I don't know if every Phase felt so similarly, about their respective subjects of interest.

And the quicker we can jump to conclusions that don't translate, with limited data.

[ He might be the slightest bit sore still. But less information certainly won't be more beneficial than more. He tilts his head slightly as he studies Mithrun in return. ]

...Gorre was similar. Perhaps less emotional... or simply not adept at processing it. He wanted data, and it was never enough. But he was troubled about the idea of overfitting the model. He wanted new information. My memories and pain were of less interest than other acquisitions... but too valuable to delete.

( "Jumping to conclusions." Fine. He'll give him that.

He considers what Michel says. )

... I think that hunger for new information is similar, if anything. Magus seemed desperate because he couldn't get what he wanted here, in Fragment. I guess his dearth of data made him destructive.

( Thinks... )

... I think being overwhelmed both by that hunger and by sentiment is... a pattern. That, and the labor of battle. By the end of each battle, each Phase seems to start breaking down.

...From what I've seen, I agree. For mine... having those memories brought back to the forefront at a time when Gorre was otherwise overloaded may have played a part.

[ That's his public story and he's sticking to it. For all he knows, it may even be true. ]

Once they've deteriorated to that point, they can be killed. Or... deleted, perhaps.

[ A programmer's deliberate distinction here, knowing full well how little "deleted" is truly gone. ]
