It's possible. That would mean Hien is likely to die, as well. Didn't you note he'd been losing parts of himself for a long time, by now? Before me, even. Was that the case for Uta as well?
I don't know. Last time I was able to speak to her, it was at the meeting and she seemed...less dedicated to Cubia than the others. It could be not having another body to return to ensures your death. [He keeps his voice low, glancing over at Memoir and Punisher, if they're around. A little bit of tact was important here. He frowns and nods]
...I noticed. He told me as much--that Cubia was making sure every bit of his 'self' would be erased. I saw him the other day. He didn't recognise me at all. [There went Haru's hope, he thinks. His shoulders sink a little. And his own, as fledgling as they had been]
That there's multiple factors that can end in death seems reasonable.
( A flowchart, with half the arrows leading to death. Granted, more Phases have lived than died by now. The circumstances that lead to death must be specific rather than generic. )
I don't know if he recognized me at the start of the battle, but he did by the end. ( Though... ) ... Barrett did forget everything, but he was still saved with me.
It must be a combination of a few different metrics, like the state of your body in reality, how long you've been seeded with Phase data, and how much of your current self you have or haven't retained. If the calculation produces an output within a certain range, it results in death.
[Sinclair scratches a few notes in his journal.] So...
Innis and Gorre --> very sudden infection. Winter had no prior contact with Cubia before Cubia started speaking to everyone --> bodies alive, mental strain was minimal comparatively? --> phases imposed upon rather than a slow takeover --> survived
Corbenik --> defeat --> dead in the other world --> Uta's death. Uta was particularly vulnerable after the news hit her.
Magus --> defeat --> body was alive in the word --> 0koto's death. 0koto's consistent defiance lead to his state degrading or being unable to hang on? 'Cursed'. Branding from Cubia's wave mark was clear on his face.
Hien: cursed shortly after the CCCorp meeting? Unable to reveal Cubia's identity even in his admin space. Admits to having no memories, nothing to replace them to make him feel like he lives anywhere or belongs anywhere unlike the rest of us.
[He wants to rip up the paper and throw it in the bin. He scratches over it with his pencil anyway]
I think the difference between you, Misteaks and Winter and then Hien is that you all had some memories to form an identity with, falsified or otherwise. Hien...doesn't. I didn't see 0koto after the meeting but if he went after Cubia, I'd imagine he was severely weakened even before you fought him.

I would have thought having a surviving body in the other world would have made a difference...but from what you described...
[a pause as he considers]
Could it also be the mental strain being infected by a phase? Makoto was cursed for far longer than anyone else, wasn't he?
