⬣//SPREAD, CONTAMINATE, ERADICATE

//AN ILL OMEN

You've had a chance to adapt to your new circumstances and make peace with what your life has become… hopefully. If you haven't, don't expect life to get any easier.

A few things have changed in recent days. Healing no longer works as effectively as it did in the past. If you're in the habit of behaving recklessly, don't expect one of Fragment's few healers to pick up the slack. Broken bones will now remain broken no matter how many healing spells are cast on your shattered limbs. Damage to organs can't be repaired with the wave of a wand.

What's more, HP and SP restoring items have gotten harder and harder to come by. Potions are no longer available for purchase at generic NPC shops and gatherable items needed for crafting have become fewer and fewer in number, limiting your item making options. If you've gotten into the bad habit of injuring yourself heedless of the consequences, it's time to rethink your lifestyle. Playtime is over.

//PAY IT NO MIND

Think of the three core memories that have formed and shaped the person you are today. Some will think back fondly on family and friends while others have been jaded by the ill treatment they've received from important figures in their lives. In any case, it's of little concern to you now. One of those three precious memories has vacated your mind, taking with it a vital piece of you that you can no longer get back.

You may choose one of the three key memories listed on your application to be taken away from your character. Choices are limited to the memories supplied in your application and additional memories submitted for the previous memshare event or not eligible for convenient plot-induced memory loss. Choose wisely, because you aren't getting it back.

//GHOSTS AND GOBLINS

And Sky Fish, and Disco Knives, and Evil Armors…

Has anyone noticed the monsters around town lately? Which town, you may ask? The answer is all of them.

Monsters have invaded Root Towns in large waves, attacking anything and everything in sight. Any lovingly crafted signs or other furnishings you've erected around town are easily torn to shreds and destroyed by the monsters who have come to roost in your once safe Root Towns. On the plus side, PvE and PvP has now been enabled in all Root Towns, which is excellent news for those who wish to combat the monster invasion and those who can't seem to help hurting themselves and others.

These monsters range in level from 50 to 75, and while many of them can be defeated with a bit of ingenuity and teamwork, some of them boast impenetrable shields that no regular attacks or spells can break through. They are also immune to status/potion/armor effects.

When in doubt, turn to your fellow players for support. There may be some among you who know how to deal with these impossibly strong monsters, but there's no guarantee that they'll want to help you.

//WHISPERS ON THE WIND

A lilting, boyish voice sings to you in your sleep. His voice sounds familiar to you, tickling your heart like a call from an old friend, but this is no friend of yours.

"You had every chance to abandon this world and return to your own. What stopped you? Was it ego? Hubris? In any case, it's too late for regrets now.

They say the world is what you make of it. Doesn't the same hold true for reality?"

The voice will periodically visit you and your sleep, but the moral of his message never changes: you did this to yourself. You were trapped here because you chose to look the other way. If anyone is to blame for the current situation, it's you and you alone, but there is a̸̬̲͔̘͈͚̠̫̘̬̗̖̋͑̉̓̿͛̈́̋͐̃̾̈̕̕ͅń̵̩̱̠̫̖̬̲̻͉̝̈́̀̀̚͜͜o̴͍͎̣͔̤̝̲͍̺̿̒t̴̨͚͓͍̜̮̥͊͑̿̈́̉̂̐͜͠͝h̷̨̨̦͕͖̙̞͙̗̗͎̬͛̂̾̋̅͜͜͝ȩ̸͎̭̙̜̯͎̯̳̮̘̲͒ȑ̸̡̧̢͓̠̦͙͇͍͎̭͑̈́̓̿̓̅̑̅̌͑̈́̕͝͝ ̴̧̼͕̟̬̰̞̮̗͔͈̬̙͍̈́̀w̵̗̖̩̘͇͖̲̩̫̣̗̙̲̌͜a̷̛͎͋͑̃͛̆̈̋̑̋͠y̴̡̬͕͈̗̫̯̟̯͊͐̌̀̐͑͘͝͝.

[There are a lot of things Mami could say she needs here, the obvious one being to not be stuck here anymore, but instead she focuses her attention on Hien and the book he just put back on the shelf.]

What were you reading just now?

[personal profile] selfconcept 2023-10-15 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Hien is quiet for a moment before finally opening his mouth to speak: ]

A memoir of a person whose memories are are so disorganized that each chapter is at a different point of time. It has multiple volumes.

[ But the book is tiny. Probably 100 pages at the most. ]

It's not particularly interesting.
fatalitea: (and led me to where I found you)

[personal profile] fatalitea 2023-10-17 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
[... Huh.]

Did you finish it, or was it that bad that you stopped reading it?
selfconcept: (pic#16675983)

[personal profile] selfconcept 2023-10-17 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
... I finished it. There are missing volumes though.

[ He's not... lying, per say. ]

Do you want to read it?
fatalitea: (that I'll try to live by)

[personal profile] fatalitea 2023-10-17 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[At that, Mami sighs.]

I suppose I could try it, if only to help pass the time here.

[She needs distractions, because the alternative is... well. Thinking too hard about their current situation.]

[personal profile] selfconcept 2023-10-17 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
... There are better books to read.

[ Honestly, but he won't stop her. The book is titled "Forgotten". No listed author. It's not like any other book that Mami has seen, because it's never existed outside of Fragment. ]

Is there a particular book that you actually want to read?
fatalitea: (and ruins of this broken world)

[personal profile] fatalitea 2023-10-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, I'm not sure. Maybe something on cooking, perhaps. I know that there's game mechanics that allow one to prepare food without actually needing cooking expertise, but I prefer doing things the old-fashioned way...

[But, Mami still reaches out and takes the book that Hien had put on the shelf back out so that she can examine it. Hmm.]

There's no author listed here... what do they call themselves, then, when writing their memoir? Or does this person never give a name of any kind?

[personal profile] selfconcept 2023-10-18 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps they don't have a name to begin with.

[ He gets out a book from... nowhere? That book is in his hand despite how it wasn't there before. It has every single detail of the game's gatherable plants that are under the botany profession, giving each a description, a sketch if she needs help visualizing, where to find them, and how they should be cared for in a garden if she chooses to get one. There are also in-game recipes that she can use for them, separated by profession levels along with what they could be used as a substitute ingredient for if she decides to cook with them, but also as ingredients themselves for real world food recipes. It's... very thorough. The book has no written author and has a bland title of "A Guide to Fragment's Botany Profession".

Hien hands the book over to Mami.
]

This has some things about cooking and making tea with plants. If you want a legitimate cookbook, you'll have to wait a day.

[ The book that Mami examines is basically written like a diary without specific days. They're only listed in years and as Hien said, they're definitely not in chronological order. The first page reads as this: "If we all create stories to protect ourselves, I write this log in order to preserve myself." ]

Oh! Thank you, this will definitely be of help to me.

[That first page in this book, though... something about those words resonate with Mami a little. She wants to do what she can to preserve herself too, in this place.]

I think I might take this book with me as well, actually. It'll give me something to read when I'm not preparing any tea or food here.

If you say so.

[ If you'd like a synopsis of the book, DM me! ]

Do you prefer reading when you're alone?

[ She seems like the kind of person... ]
fatalitea: (and led me to where I found you)

[personal profile] fatalitea 2023-10-25 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
When I'm alone, huh...

[Said with the tone of someone who clearly isn't fond of being alone, and yet probably does everything alone and has to really think about it here as to what things she actually prefers doing alone as opposed to doing so because there weren't other people around to do those things with.]

I suppose I do an awful lot of reading, yes, when I am in need of something to do to pass the time. Otherwise, I'm usually doing my homework if I'm not already caught up on my studies somehow.

[personal profile] selfconcept 2023-10-26 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm. Then let me assign you one.

[ The dreaded homework!! Also to keep her busy... ]

Cook one of the dishes in the book for me. I won't judge it, but I would like to eat something made by you. I think it would be nice.

[Mami blinks a bit in surprise. Of all the things she was expecting Hien to say next, it certainly wasn't that. She looks at the cookbook cover with consideration for a moment, and then back to him.]

... Very well. I will give it a shot. [She holds up the book.] Is there something in particular that you would like to eat from this book, or does it not matter what I make as long as it's something listed in here?

Make something that you really like making the most.

[ There would be a lot of care put into the recipe if it's something like that, he thinks. ]
