There's a rather cynical part of him that has come to view most people to behave in certain manners, and yet how is he to give blame to that? It's just what he has come to expect.
But maybe he wanted to show a bit more vulnerability. To someone he feels he's started to truly trust, even if the word 'trust' has not been voiced out loud by him that he can remember or recall. Maybe he already has said it to Michel.
It doesn't matter, though. Michel grants voice well enough to his own thoughts, which make him feel...comforted. And he is afraid to even say it but, 'safe', as well.
